Zanzibar Discovery

Located in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Tanzania, lies the breathtaking island of Zanzibar. The island is famous for its rich cultural history, aromatic spice plantations, and immaculate beaches, making it a destination that appeals to all the senses and provides a journey of discovery. In this blog post, I will share the highlights of my unforgettable trip to Zanzibar with Southern Cross Safaris, where history, nature, and relaxation merge together.

Stone Town: A Stroll Through History

My adventure in Zanzibar began in Stone Town, the island's historic heart. As soon as I stepped into the narrow alleys, I was surrounded by intricately carved wooden doors, bustling markets, and historic landmarks. The House of Wonders and the Old Fort are just a few of the places that immerse visitors in the island's diverse history. The blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences can be felt in every step, making Stone Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site that feels like a living museum.

Spice Tour: A Journey of Aromas

Zanzibar is famously known as the "Spice Island". During my visit to one of its spice plantations, I had the opportunity to explore the lush greenery and learn about the origins of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla. The locals offered me a guided tour and I engaged in harvesting and processing these aromatic treasures, which was a truly hands-on experience. This experience gave me a newfound appreciation for the flavors that are intrinsic to Zanzibar's culture and cuisine.

Prison Island: Turquoise Waters and Giant Turtles

After taking a short boat ride from Stone Town, I arrived at Prison Island. The island is famous for its crystal-clear waters and also for a surprising population of giant Aldabra tortoises. These gentle giants are over a century old and roam freely on the island, creating a surreal atmosphere. I went snorkeling in the pristine coral reefs around Prison Island and it provided me with a glimpse of the vibrant marine life of Zanzibar.

Nungwi: White Sands and Turquoise Horizons

Heading north to Nungwi, I discovered Zanzibar's postcard-perfect beaches. The powdery white sands and the mesmerizing turquoise waters set the stage for relaxation and rejuvenation. Water activities such as snorkeling, diving, and sailing allowed me to explore the rich underwater world of Zanzibar, while the vibrant nightlife of Nungwi added a touch of excitement to the serene coastal atmosphere.

Jozani Forest: A Date with Red Colobus Monkeys

A visit to Jozani Forest, the last remaining indigenous forest in Zanzibar, brought me face-to-face with the charismatic and endangered Red Colobus monkeys. The canopy walkways and lush vegetation provided a tranquil escape into nature, offering a stark contrast to the coastal landscapes.

Sunset Dhow Cruise: A Perfect Farewell

As my time in Zanzibar drew to a close, I embarked on a sunset dhow cruise, a traditional wooden sailing boat. Gliding along the coastline as the sun dipped below the horizon, I marveled at the kaleidoscope of colors painting the sky. The gentle sea breeze and the rhythmic lapping of the waves against the dhow created a serene and magical moment, a perfect farewell to the island paradise.

Zanzibar, with its blend of history, spice, and natural beauty, proved to be a destination that exceeded my expectations. From the cultural allure of Stone Town to the tranquil beaches of Nungwi, every corner of the island offered unique and enriching experiences. Zanzibar, with its warm hospitality and diverse attractions, has etched its place in my travel memories as a truly exceptional destination.
